Photo Friday: Literatura Polska

Sara Naumann photo friday bookshelf

This month Keith and I have been enjoying lots of evening dates, thanks to our babysitting niece! After Anna goes to bed, we head over to our new favorite bookstore/cafe just off the bustling main street in Sopot. This little cafe has the best—I mean, the best—truskawka (or strawberry) tea I’ve ever ever ever had.

Even better, the cafe walls are lined with bookshelves—and although they’re all in Polish, I somehow feel good simply for being around them.

I guess I just love books, whether or not I can read them.

I also love bookshelves loaded with actual books that people actually read (I mean, have you read about the decline of bookshelves for books?) and while most of that affection is because of the books theselves, I also think there’s an aesthetic that happens when you have shelf after shelf of books.

This photo was a quick snapshot as I was playing with the idea of lines—both vertically and horizontally. Of course the shelves and the category sign go one way, the books themselves (most of them, anyway) go the opposite direction, and I really love the play of line and balance.

Happy Friday!

  1. I grew up in a predominately Polish neighborhood in Detroit. Just the photo and the title alone bring back rich memories. So glad that I stopped in to see and read your blog. Good stuff here!

  2. Dawn, my dad grew up in Lansing, Michigan and said his school was about half Polish and half Dutch, so pretty similar to what you’ve experienced. I’m glad you stopped by and hope to see you again! 🙂
