Photo Friday: Vintage California Sign

Vintage Motel sign

I happened across this cool vintage-vibe sign by happy accident: Last month I was in California for the CHA (Craft & Hobby Association) trade show. I  needed contact lens solution and was told the pharmacy was just a few blocks away from my hotel. Since winter in Poland is cold and snowy, the opportunity to walk outside in the sunshine in January was a rather heady experience and so I headed off down the street, having forgotten just how long a California block actually is. Also which direction I should be going.

So I ended up a bit lost. Well, quite lost, to be honest. But the weather was beautiful (can I emphasize, I was wearing no coat for the first time in months) and the walk was easy…and I spotted this cool sign.

I love this sign. I mean, I love signs in general for design inspiration but I really really love this sign. I love the arrow (“campers”!), the neon “pools” letters, the little starry asterisk at the top. I love the blue and orange and how it makes me think of vintage cars and drive-throughs and summertime. I love that it totally stands out from all the chain hotels and motels lining the street.

Here’s to happy accidents…especially on a sunny January day!
