Washi Tape Tuesday: Covering Brads

Welcome to Washi Tape Tuesday! Love washi tape? (Or maybe you have a stash that you want to put to use?) Then join me for tips, techniques and ideas for adding washi tape to your handmade cards!

Today’s technique is about covering brads with washi tape. This works perfectly with larger, flat brads—if you’re like me, you’ve got a stash of 22mm brads in your embellishment box and this is the perfect way to give them a new look.

(Don’t have brads that size? Use circle-punched pieces of cardstock to re-create the card layout!)

Washi Tape Tuesday: Whatever You Are

What you’ll need—

• Spectrum Noir alcohol ink refills: TB4, PL1. UK crafters, check the Crafter’s Companion website for info. Those in the US and Canada can get them from Paper Wishes.

• Rubber brayer

• 22mm brads

• Washi tape: Narrow grey dot, Black and grey leaf

Eclectica ESN12 Stamps: PaperArtsy

Surfacez inkpad: Black

• White, black, cream cardstock

• Blue baker’s twine

How to do it—

1. Brayer white cardstock with TB4 and PL1 Spectrum Noir alcohol ink refills.

2. Add a strip of narrow grey dot washi tape horizontally across the inked piece. Stamp the quote with black right above it. Add torn pieces of black and grey leaf washi tape as shown: Above and below the grey tape, above the stamped quote, and in the top left of the card. Accent with small pieces of torn grey dot washi tape.

3. Tear a piece of black and grey leaf washi tape and place across the top of a 22mm pink brad. Trim around the edges, then ink the edges of the brad with black Surfacez ink. Repeat to cover three brads. The black and grey leaf pattern on the washi tape makes it look like it’s two-tone, doesn’t it?

Note: It’s important to ink the edges of the metal brads with ink designed for non-porous surfaces, like Surfacez or Staz-On.

4. Mat the brayered piece on cream, then black cardstock. Insert the three brads as shown and glue to the card front. Tie a bow in blue baker’s twine and glue to the card front.

That’s it—easy!
