My go-to card focals? Layering dies!

Hello friends! The past few weeks have been really busy—and when things get busy, I find myself turning to my go-to techniques. One of my favorites is using layering dies, where you glue die-cut pieces together to create a layered image like these florals.

Last time I was in the US, I bought the Vivid Blooms dies from Spellbinders, and last weekend was my first chance to play with it—so today I have three takes on this set!

First, keeping it simple…

  1. White-on-White

Often, when I get a new layering set, I’ll just die cut all the pieces from white to see how they actually layer up. And I really love how white-on-white flowers look, simple and elegant. The stamp is one of mine, EM119 from PaperArtsy. Rectangle cutting die from Paper Wishes.

2. Pull a Single Image

For a simple focal, one layered flower is a super—and easy—option. This is especially good if you’re batch-making cards (as I will be, for a charity event next autumn). You can make this flower in so many different color ways, ranging from bright and cheerful to soft and muted. Script Dazzle and rectangle cutting die from Paper Wishes.

3. Full-Color Die Cutting

Am I the only one saving those last little snippets of cardstock, “just in case”? LOL, I’m sure not! A card like this is a great way to use up those leftover pieces. Don’t forget, you can add in specialty papers, too. Hugs sticker and square nested dies from Paper Wishes.

One tip: I found that layering up some of the elements with foam tape helps to create even more dimension on the cards, so I generally create a layered base with the die-cut rectangle or square shapes.

And don’t forget: BellaCon is next week—are you joining us? I’m teaching a class using more dies, to create some pretty (and unexpected?) Steampunk designs. You can sign up here and check out the class kit too. For the event, you can either sign up with this link to get the Swag Option or this one for the non-Swag choice.

I hope to see you there!
