Welcome to Washi Tape Tuesday! Love washi tape? (Or maybe you have a stash that you want to put to use?) Then join me for tips, techniques and ideas for adding washi tape to your handmade cards!

This week I needed something quick and easy—and since spring is (almost!) in the air around here, I also wanted to play with fresh, bright colors. Of course washi tape is perfect for that! 🙂

This card is super-simple: Just a few strips of washi tape, with a stencil-textured harlequin design on top. The texture is made with Grunge Paste colored with Distress Paint for a pretty yellow (well, Squeezed Lemonade, to be precise) color.

Washi tape Distress Paint Grunge Paste card

Have you used Grunge Paste before? It’s a thick, texturizing medium that works beautifully with stencils. It comes in a putty color, so it can be tinted with paint and other mediums. Distress Paint is fairly watery—great when painting, but when applied through a stencil, it can easily seep under the plastic. So these two are a perfect combination: Mix the paint with Grunge Paste to give it some body; the Grunge Paste accepts the color of the paint perfectly so you still get beautiful color, but with the added benefit of texture and a stenciled pattern that’s crisp and clean.

Grunge Paste Distress Paint Washi Tape Card, what you need—

– Washi tape: Green solid, flower green (MT)

Grunge Paste: PaperArtsy

Squeezed Lemonade Distress Paint (Ranger)

6″ Harlequin stencil (The Crafter’s Workshop)

– Palette knife

– White, green cardstock

– Blank kraft card

– Silk flowers, brad, twine

– Craft sheet

Grunge Paste Distress Paint Washi Tape Card, how to make it—

1. Place strips of washi tape diagonally across white cardstock, alternating patterned with solid green. Don’t cover the entire piece. Place the stencil on top and secure with extra washi tape.

2. Mix Grunge Paste and Distress Paint together on a craft sheet. Use the palette knife to scoop out some of the Grunge Paste. Mix a bit of Distress Paint into the Grunge Paste, blending with the palette knife. Use the palette knife to spread the mixture through the stencil.

3. Immediately remove the stencil and wash it off with soap and water. Let the stenciled piece dry.

4. Trim the stenciled cardstock and mat on green, then wrap with twine and add two flowers. Tie a bow in a piece of twine and glue as shown.

5. Mount on kraft card.

Simple, bright and cheerful—perfect for an almost-spring day!
